Ebb Carbon is thrilled to announce that we’ve been named to the 2025 Global Cleantech 100—a list that highlights the most promising private companies making an impact in sustainable innovation. This recognition comes at an exciting time as we continue to grow and expand the use of our electrochemical Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE) technology to remove carbon from the atmosphere and improve ocean health.

What is the Global Cleantech 100?

Now in its 16th year, the Global Cleantech 100 showcases the most promising private cleantech companies making significant contributions to sustainable innovation. For Ebb Carbon, this recognition is a testament to the growing momentum around marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) generally, and Ebb’s solution specifically, as a critical tool in addressing climate change.

Unlocking the Ocean's Potential as a Climate Solution

Leveraging the Earth’s natural carbon regulation systems is essential to cost-effectively scaling carbon dioxide removal (CDR). Covering more than 70% of the planet’s surface, the ocean serves as Earth’s largest air contactor, naturally absorbing gigatonnes of CO₂ annually through the exchange of gas between the air and sea. Ebb Carbon’s electrochemical Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE) technology enhances this natural process using bipolar electrodialysis (BPED). By increasing the ocean’s capacity to store carbon and reducing coastal acidification, this technology not only addresses climate change but also protects marine ecosystems vital to the health of our planet.

Since Ebb Carbon’s founding in 2020, we’ve made significant strides in developing and deploying our innovative OAE technology. In collaboration with the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), we deployed our first marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) system, marking a major milestone as the only marine carbon dioxide removal facility hosted by a National Lab. Building on this success, we entered a landmark agreement with Microsoft to remove up to 350,000 tonnes of CO₂ over the next decade. We’ve also been recognized as a semi-finalist for the Department of Energy's carbon removal purchase prize and as a finalist for the prestigious XPRIZE.

Ebb Carbon is demonstrating the immense potential of the ocean as a climate solution, paving the way for responsible, science-driven innovation to combat climate change while protecting our marine environments. Being named to the Global Cleantech 100 isn’t just a milestone—it’s another signal of what’s possible for the field of mCDR.
